Home burial in Florida — what the law actually says

Florida has no statewide law against backyard pet burial, but your county or city may have ordinances that do prohibit it. Before burying a pet at home in Florida, check with your local government.

General guidelines where home burial is permitted:

  • → Bury on property you own (not rented)
  • → Depth of at least 2–3 feet to prevent scavenging and odor
  • → At least 150 feet from any well or water source
  • → Away from property lines and utility easements
  • → Some HOA covenants may also prohibit it — check your deed

Florida's warm, humid climate accelerates decomposition, which makes proper depth important. If you move later, the pet remains with the property.

You want a formal, permanent burial plot, a dedicated space to visit, and professional handling — and budget is not the primary concern.
